Today is the international day of: TROW YOUR TROPHIES TO THE TRASH.
A city of words - by Xepo W.S.
In April 2011 a first group of artists arrived in Shanghai, invited to participate in the Visiting Artist Program at The Swatch Art Peace Hotel. Phil Haddock was one of them, and arrived already with a map of words in his mind: streets made by textures of other people’s memories, fears and desires.
A new Chinese city arose on the banks of the Huangpu river to help develop commerce with other countries. Since the city appeared, Shanghai has changed the style of life of millions of persons. A hotel built at the start of the 20th century was at the heart of Shanghai’s social life, and today, after more than 100 years of history, The Swatch Art Peace Hotel has become one of the most important art centers in China.
Days pass as Phil Haddock walks through the city. He listens to what the walls are telling him, the old ones and new ones. Destruction, creation, evolution. The people grow old, the city is transformed. Which are the words that you will use to build streets? Which will be the paragraph that builds your neighbourhood?
Old man Haddock has to design a city without people but full of stories. He knows that books are the ones who speak of souls and their paths. It is time for research, time to walk through books that will represent his feelings for this city.
And Eureka! The ideas come and fill the room with molds and clay and words still trapped in papers and books. Room 25 becomes a ceramic workshop, but luckily it also has a bed! Mugs full of green tea accompany long nights of experimentation as the artist walks the road to a city of words. Time stops and stretches into the distance as he sinks into his work, aware of nothing else.
When he wakes he has built a city in clay, a map made of words where we can see the old streets of Shanghai in the thirties, streets that today are neon motorways and where instead of little houses you have huge compounds filled with souls. Yes, it’s a map of the city’s transformation, the rhythm of the stones, the words of man. Next step—a bronze cast.
*Lu Xu - The Real Story of AH-Q , André Malraux – La Condition Humaine, Queen Victoria - Treaty of Nanking 1842, Italo Calvino - Le città invisibili, James Joyce - Finnegans Wake, Allen Ginsberg - Howl, Dante Alighieri - L’inferno, Federico G. Lorca - La Guitarra. We never will know why he has chosen these books. Maybe the books are the ones who choose him.
